Todd Goodwin’s hat trick leads the Golden Bears to their eighth University Cup title as they skate past the AUAA champion Acadia Axemen by a score of 5-2. Goodwin, who led the tournament scoring race with 3-3-6 in two games, scored his first goal of the game 21 seconds into the the second period and then added two goals in the third. Goodwin’s second goal is a shorthanded tally at the 10:00 mark of the final frame which gave the Golden Bears a 4-2 lead and he completes his hat trick with an empty net goal with only nine seconds remaining. Alberta captain Ian Herbers, who would go on to play with the Edmonton Oilers and New York Islanders, scores the University Cup winning goal at 14:56 of the second period. Herbers’ goal comes only 43 seconds after Darren Burns ties the game at 2-2 for Acadia. Golden Bears defenceman Garth Premak is named the tournament MVP, becoming one of only four defencemen to earn the honor in University Cup history.

Alberta reached the tournament final by virtue of their 9-1 win over the Trois-Rivieres Patriotes. Cory Clouston’s hat trick paces the Golden Bears attack as nine Alberta players register multiple-point games in the semi-final. The win over Trois-Rivieres avenges Alberta’s loss to the Patritoes in the 1990-91 final. Acadia, making its first-ever trip to the University Cup tournament, score four third period goals in their 5-2 semi-final win over Wilfrid Laurier.
