In front of a hometown crowd, the Alberta Golden Bears capture their seventh national championship with a 5-2 victory over the Trois-Rivieres Patriotes at the Northlands Agricom. Stacey Wakabayashi scores the University Cup winning goal at 4:26 of the third period and Jeff Helland nets two goals for the Golden Bears, who outshoot the Patriotes 33-19. For Wakabayashi the week is one of extreme highs and lows. The sophomore right-winger’s father passed away on the Monday prior to the start of the tournament and he returned home to 100 Mile House, B.C. for the funeral on Wednesday. He returned to Edmonton in time for Alberta’s 5-4 win over Moncton and scored a shorthanded goal in the semi-final victory. He then scored the game-winner in the championship final. Wakabayashi would play five seasons with Alberta and rounded out his career as a Golden Bear by being named the winner of the Senator Joseph A. Sullivan Trophy as the CIS’s most outstanding player in 1988-89.
