Tournament MVP Dave Hindmarch scored twice, including the game-winning goal, in the first period to lead Alberta to a 5-1 win over the Dalhousie Tigers, who were making their first-ever trip to the University Cup tournament. Golden Bears’ co-captain John Devaney assisted on both of Hindmarch’s goals and led all scorers in the championship final with 2-2-4. Two of six players in the game went on to play for Canada at the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid. Hindmarch and Devaney were joined on the Canadian Olympic Team by teammates Randy Gregg, Kevin Primeau and Don Spring as well as Paul MacLean of Dalhousie. Alberta coach Clare Drake was one of three coaches that led Canada’s return to the Olympic stage after an absence of 12 years.
