Two familiar faces meet once again in the University Cup final as Alberta and Toronto met for the third time in the last four seasons. It was Toronto’s fourth consecutive appearance in the final and Alberta’s third since 1975. This season saw the tournament format changed to a six-team affair with round robin play among the two pools of three teams. Alberta advanced to the final from Pool A following 7-3 wins over both the Regina Cougars and St. Francis Xavier X-Men, while Toronto emerged from Pool B with victories over the host Moncton Aigles Bleus and Concordia Stingers.

Kevin Primeau scored twice, including the University Cup winning goal, and added an assist and linemate Dave Breakwell scored 2-2-4 to lead Alberta to a 6-5 victory. The Golden Bears built a 4-2 first period lead and led the entire game on their way to their third national title and the first of three consecutive University Cups.
