The University Cup tournament took on a new look as the CIS opted for a series of best-of-three series between conference champions. Alberta advanced to the final after sweeping the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) champion Brandon University Bobcats and Loyola University Warriors, champions of the QUAA. In both series Alberta goaltender Dale Henwood earned shutouts, blanking Brandon 10-0 and Loyola 2-0. Toronto returned to the national stage as they earned a hard fought victory in three games over their archrivals – the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

In the Cup final, Henwood registered his third shutout of the post-season with 23 saves as Alberta took the opener 5-0. Toronto evened the series with a 3-2 win in game two, setting the stage for a winner take all scenario for game three. The teams traded goals in the first period and headed into the second stanza tied at 2-2. Alberta exploded for three unanswered goals in the second period to take a 5-2 lead on their way to a third national title. Henwood was named tournament MVP as he was 5-1 in six games with three shutouts and a 1.33 goals-against average. Oliver Steward, who scored the University Cup winning goal, seven seconds into the second period, led all tournament scorers with 5-7-12.
