In their first of a CIS record 34 University Cup appearances, the Alberta Golden Bears win their first of 13 national championships with a 9-1 win over the Sir George Williams Maroons. Howie Green, scores a hat trick to lead Alberta to the win and ties for the tournament scoring title with Ken Marchant of the University of New Brunswick. The Golden Bears score the game’s first six goals before defenceman Dave Dies scores the Maroons only goal midway through the third period to ruin Golden Bears goaltender Dale Harder’s shutout bid. Dies would be named the tournament MVP. For Golden Bears defenceman Rod “Butch” Hyde it is his second consecutive University Cup championship as he captained McMaster to the 1963 title before transferring to Alberta.
